Today's healthcare industry continues to face the difficult challenge of providing the best quality care possible in an environment of limited resources and increasing healthcare costs. Successfully delivering healthcare in a manner that is both efficient and effective calls for a patient centric focus. That is, recognition of the end user — the patient — is critical when designing and managing healthcare systems. Clearly, operations management plays a key role in patient centric care and achieving the goals of improving care and lowering costs. In addition, recent emerging approaches in analytics and information technology provide important data driven opportunities for improving the delivery of healthcare by better addressing patient needs.

Therefore, for this conference and special issue, we invite submissions with a focus that makes the work more patient oriented, interpreted in a very broad sense. This includes traditional operations management topics that take into account the central role of the patient, and may also incorporate emerging healthcare analytics and information technology concepts. All research methodologies are welcome.

Examples of papers of interest include, but are not limited to, healthcare studies with relevance to operations management that incorporate:

  • Patient satisfaction (e.g., use of patient focused performance measures)
  • Patient experience (e.g., incorporating patient and provider preferences in the design and management of healthcare services)
  • Quality of care (e.g., improved quality achieved via healthcare analytics with a patient centric focus)
  • Improved patient outcomes (e.g., reducing medical errors, use of electronic medical records)
  • Access to care (e.g., use of emerging technologies, social media, telemedicine; access based on patient needs/priority/classification)
  • Behavioral operations management issues related to patient focused care
  • Coordinated care delivery, continuum of care, accountable care organizations (ACO), integrating levels of care for patients (e.g., between the hospital, skilled nursing, home care, urgent care, etc.)
  • Healthcare studies at the interface of operations management/analytics/technology with an emphasis on patient needs
  • Other operations management studies with an emphasis on patient needs
